The Ben White Legacy for Dolphins

photo, smiling man with a shrewd intelligent gazenBen White was a pioneer in the important broad-based anti-captivity campaign for dolphins. In addition to his work on anti-captivity issues, he was a strong and early opponent of the cruel dolphin drive fisheries in Taiji and Futo, Japan.

Ben died of cancer in 2005, a tremendous loss to the animal welfare and environmental communities. We have dedicated our Save Japan Dolphins Campaign to his memory and hopes for dolphins.

Here's a list of some of the captive dolphin facilities that our organizations, members of the Save Japan Dolphins Coalition, were able to close. Ben White played an important role in several of these campaigns:

With the continued support of the funding and NGO communities, we believe Japan’s worst dolphin slaughter, the biggest remaining cetacean slaughter in the world, can be shut down. Ben White worked for such a conclusion for years. We can fulfill Ben’s dream and let the Japanese dolphins again swim free.
