In a major victory for whale conservation, a federal court ruled in favor of the US National Marinef Fisheries Servide and four environmental group intervenors including the Earth Island Institute, to block the importation of 18 beluwha whales from Russia's Sea of Okhotsk. The belugas would have been imported for public display at several captivity facilities in the US including the Georgia Aquarium and Shedd Aquarium.
I walked into the Atlantis Hotel here in Nassau in the Bahamas this morning to deliver our urgent request to the International Marine Animal Trainer's Association (IMATA), which is holding their annual conference here.
Our letter requests that IMATA renounce the captures of dolphins for captivity that help fund the dolphin slaughter in Taijji, Japan, and we further urge IMATA to take action against any of their members who engage in captures, training, buying or selling, or trading in Taiji dolphins. Our letter is endorsed by a growing number of scientists and conservation organizations.
I am here to ask the International Marine Animal Trainers' Association, meeting in Nassau, to renounce the captures of live dolphins during the Taiji dolphin slaughter, going on right now in Japan.
